“- of the cave. Of the world: What will molt? What will keep?” explores our internal worlds and the ways they absorb and reflect our made up, and often harmful systems. It is directly inspired by Mariame Kaba’s “We Do This ‘Till We Free Us,” and Ana Samantha’s abolitionist cultural work. Within the collaged layers we get to examine the connective tissue between us, the stories we’re told, and the ones we tell ourselves. When taking on the task of imagining something new we are burdened with unraveling normalcy. Where do our own hopes begin? and the zeitgeist end? Through archival imagery, and distorted cutouts of nature and historical records, we get to see Ana Samantha’s depiction of the world reflecting off of us – back to us, creating a feedback loop that asks: “What will molt? What will keep?”
