Vengeance is not justice
deep roots of racism. Antiblack
fear guides tough on crime
seeing those not white as “Other”
not worthy of basic human needs –
housing, safety, education, work
holding a broken system in place
unequal forever from beginning of this country’s constitution
uneven sentencing leaves women, Black Brown people and LGBT most vulnerable
time to envision society of accountability rather than punishment
possible to begin now and let solutions emerge
grateful for push to understand the deep complexity of prison industrial complex
